In The Short Term, Carbohydrate Diet Can Lower The Intelligence
Whenhealthy - Eliminating carbohydrates in daily diet can indeed lose
weight, but its side effects is quite surprising, the decline in memory. It is
proved by experiments conducted Holly A. Taylor, PhD, and colleagues.
They studied 19 women aged between 22-55 years were ordered
to do low-carb diet or low calorie diet (lots of fruits, vegetables, and
grains). Before the diet, participants experiment tested whether short-term
memory or long-term. The test is repeated one, two, and three weeks after
starting the diet.
In memory test unity week, the participants were
low-carbohydrate diet showed a worse outcome than the participants low calorie
diet. Participants of low-carbohydrate diets have slower reaction and
visual-spatial memory worse. However they showed better results on tests of
attention and the ability to remain in a given task.
Memory skills of participants low carbohydrate diet showed
improvement after the first week when they were asked to eat foods that contain
carbohydrates in limited quantities.
Results of this experiment showed that the diet does not
only affect the weight. The brain requires glucose (derived from the breakdown
of carbohydrates) for energy, therefore low-carbohydrate diet can reduce
learning ability, memory, and thinking. As stated Taylor.
However, this experiment proves only short-term effects of
low-carbohydrate diets, for that other studies should be conducted to see the
effect of diet on the long-term memory.
